Peace Bridge (1954 - 1959) and Grunwaldzki Bridge (1908 - 1910), as seen from a tower of John the Baptist Archcathedral of Wroclaw. Peace Bridge got its name on May 8, 1966, the National Day of Victory and Freedom in the years 1945 - 2015. Grunwaldzki Bridge was named so in 1947 after the Battle of Grunwald, as the year of its completion, 1910, was also the 500th anniversary of this battle. On the right side of the photo, Maria and Lech Kaczynski Boulevard (in construction) linking western ends of the two bridges. Behind the western pylon gate of Grunwaldzki Bridge is seen a house on the water moored in the confluence of the Odra and Olawa rivers. Fine Art Photography by Zbigniew Halat

The seemingly engineering ineptness of the Grunwaldzki suspension bridge was chosen for aesthetic reasons. Its structure has a monumental appearance not obscuring the view over St John the Baptist Cathedral of Wroclaw. The post war Polish inhabitants of Wroclaw appreciate this effort of the early 20th c. City Council. After having been raised 1947 from annihilation caused by the Nazi Kommandantur der Festung Breslau, the bridge was named Grunwaldzki (pronounce Groonvaltski) to commemorate the Battle of Grunwald (Schlacht bei Tannenberg), 1410, where under the command of Wladyslaw Jagiello, the Baptizer of Lithuania, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, Founder of a Free Union of the Peoples of East Central Europe, Polish and Lithuanian knights supported by Ruthenian, Czech, Moldavian, Smolensk, and Tatar forces defeated the Teutonic Order. The medieval Battle of Grunwald is a vivid symbol of struggle against foreign invaders. Wroclaw, Poland, is proud of its symbol of struggle for freedom.
